John Gosden won the most valuable two-year-old race in Europe this season with GHURAIR in the £500,000 Tattersalls 2YO Trophy and in turn extended his lead in the Flat Trainer’s Championship. The son of Elusive Quality was bought at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 last year for 180,000 gns by Shadwell Estates from Staffordstown Stud.

The colt went off favourite for the race with HAVANA GOLD as second favourite and those two battled it out over the final furlong, with GHURAIR prevailing by a head.

John Gosden commented, “He was unlucky at Goodwood and should have been second in the Vintage Stakes rather then fifth. We then put him away and he has grown and filled out during his time off. I was surprised to see him as favourite for the race. He is a nice horse and we will look as to whether we run him again or put him away for the winter and look at the 2,000 Guineas next May.”

Andrew Balding’s RACE AND STATUS, a maiden winner on his only start finished in third.

Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 takes place this Tuesday 9 October until Thursday 11 October. Catalogues are out now and available from Tattersalls in Newmarket or Tattersalls representatives.
