TOP PRICED YEARLING HYDROGEN HEADS STRONG ENTRIES FOR THE 2013-2014 TATTERSALLS MILLIONS

The 2013-2014 renewal of the Tattersalls Millions has seen a total of 261 two-year-olds entered for the £1,300,000 six-race series, which begins in September. All the horses are graduates of the 2012 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 with purchase prices ranging from 21,000 guineas to 2,500,000 guineas, the highest price for a yearling in the world last year.

The leading British and Irish trainers to have made entries include John Gosden, Aidan O’Brien, Mark Johnson, Richard Fahey and Richard Hannon, who holds the largest number of entries at 27. Hannon, whose entries were purchased for between 32,000 guineas and 420,000 guineas, dominated the race series in 2012, winning four of the six races. Other trainers numerically well represented include William Haggas with 14 entries, Jeremy Noseda with 13, Clive Brittain with 11, Roger Varian and Luca Cumani each with 10 and Andrew Balding and Michael Bell both with nine.

Notable entries include HYDROGEN, the three-parts brother to Derby winner Authorized, from Peter Chapple-Hyam’s yard. Bought by David Redvers on behalf of Sheikh Fahad al Thani, this colt was the joint third-highest priced yearling colt ever in Europe. Another high profile entry is the full-sister to the Grade 1 winner Together and the three-parts sister to Group 1 winning juvenile Jan Vermeer, as yet unnamed, who was bought for 1,300,000 guineas by Derrick Smith and who is in training with Aidan O’Brien. Other entries from O’Brien’s stable include the unnamed first foal of the Champion filly Ouija Board, bought for 525,000 guineas for owner Michael Tabor and a Galileo colt out of Alexander Goldrun who realised 950,000gns.

The leading stallions of 2012 are well represented in this years entries. Champion sire Galileo has 16 entries, Invincible Spirit, sire of Victrix Ludorum who won two of the Tattersalls Millions races last year, has 20, Oasis Dream has 10, Exceed and Excel has nine and leading first season sire of 2012, New Approach has 13 entries. First season sires represented include Aqlaam, Bushranger, Mastercraftsman and Sea The Stars, whose 575,000 guineas colt ROYAL BATTALION has been entered by owners Qatar Bloodstock.

Edmond Mahony, Chairman of Tattersalls commented, “The number and quality of entries continues to underline the popularity of the Tattersalls Millions race series which is now in it’s sixth renewal. It is always important to give owners the opportunity to race for decent prizemoney and with the number of races available with the Tattersalls Millions as well as the low entry costs, it is no surprise the series is popular. We are already looking forward to another competitive Tattersalls Millions series.”

There are a total six races in the £1,300,000 series, starting in September 2013. All races take place at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse.
